Chapter 7
How Boldly Should You Play?
Calibrating Your Strategic Risk Threshold
The biggest risk is not taking any risk… In a world that’s changing quickly, the only strategy that is guaranteed to fail is not taking risks.
Risk appetite isn’t about being brave or conservative but strategic alignment. Your willingness to embrace uncertainty should match your organization’s stage, competitive position, and stakeholder expectations. Start-ups often require a high risk appetite to break through established markets. Mature enterprises may need a moderate appetite to maintain their market position while exploring adjacencies. Regulated industries typically demand lower appetite due to compliance requirements. Turnaround situations might call for bold moves when incremental change won’t suffice.
The key insight is that there is no universal “right” risk appetite — only the right appetite for your specific situation.

- Competitor Benchmark — research one direct competitor’s recent strategic moves. Are they more or less risk-aggressive than you?
- Appetite Adjust — identify one area where your natural appetite may need conscious recalibration for the next six months.
